What is fetal surveillance and antenatal testing?

Fetal surveillance and antenatal testing monitor your pregnancy in high-risk situations. If you need fetal surveillance and antenatal testing, it doesn't mean your baby is in trouble or that you'll lose the pregnancy. It's simply a safety measure. 

The goal is to make sure you have a successful, healthy pregnancy, even if you have some challenges. 

When might I need fetal surveillance and antenatal testing?

The Advanced Perinatal Associates team may recommend fetal surveillance and antenatal testing in the following situations.

  • Age 35 or older
  • Medical conditions such as diabetes and hypertension
  • Multiple pregnancy (twins or more babies)
  • Post-term pregnancy (very overdue pregnancy)
  • Decrease or change in baby's movements

While it may seem scary to have a high-risk pregnancy that requires additional tests, these tests are simply a way to get more information and make sure your baby's well.

What does fetal surveillance and antenatal testing involve?

Fetal surveillance and antenatal testing can include:

Ultrasounds

Advanced Perinatal Associates performs 3D and 4D ultrasounds in the office for the most advanced imaging possible. You may need ultrasounds at several points throughout your pregnancy, beyond the standard ultrasounds, to monitor your baby.

Nonstress test

A nonstress test monitors your baby's heart rate and movement. This no-risk test involves monitoring through a sensor on your abdomen. 

Contraction stress test

A contraction stress test monitors your baby's heart rate as an intravenous (IV) medication induces uterine contractions. It's a test to see how your baby will respond to labor. 

Biophysical profile

A biophysical profile combines ultrasound and nonstress testing. This test produces a great deal of valuable information about your baby, including their heart rate, respiration, movements, and muscle tone. A biophysical profile also measures amniotic fluid level.
